MASSAGE & BODYWORK FAQs

What is massage therapy?

Massage therapy involves various techniques of manipulating the body's soft tissues to relieve pain or stress. This is achieved through the skilled application of pressure, kneading, and rubbing using hands, fingers, elbows, and sometimes specialized tools. In professional settings, clients may receive massages while positioned on a table, seated in a chair, or lying on a mat.

The term "massage" has etymological roots in several languages, including French, Arabic, Latin, and Greek, each suggesting a form of touch or manipulation. The practice has a rich history, evidenced by its documentation in ancient civilizations such as Egypt, China, and Greece, where it was employed for healing and relaxation.

Today, massage therapy is recognized as a professional healthcare option across the globe. Practitioners, often referred to as massage therapists or when certified, as a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT), are trained in a variety of techniques. These include Swedish massage for relaxation, deep tissue massage for muscle tension, and acupressure for pain relief, among others. The field has grown to be recognized for its role in healthcare, wellness, and injury recovery and reduction.

What is bodywork?

In the realm of alternative medicine, bodywork encompasses a broad range of therapeutic and personal development practices that involve direct interaction with the human body. These practices can include manipulative therapy, which adjusts the body's structural alignment; breath work, which focuses on the patterns of breathing for physical and emotional benefits; and energy medicine, which is intended to balance the body’s energy fields. Bodywork is not only about physical manipulation but also promotes the understanding of the bodymind connection—a holistic perspective that views the body and mind as interlinked and interdependent.

Additionally, bodywork practices aim to improve posture and increase bodily awareness, enhancing the individual's understanding of how mental and physical states affect each other. Some practitioners also engage with the human body's electromagnetic field, which is believed by some to influence health. This diverse field integrates various techniques to support healing, promote relaxation, and foster an integrated approach to health that acknowledges the complex interactions between the mind and body.

How can I ensure a massage is comfortable and safe?

To ensure a massage is comfortable and safe, follow these tips:

Choose a Qualified Therapist: Ensure that your massage therapist is certified and has a good reputation. Check their credentials and read reviews from other clients.

Communicate Clearly: Before starting, discuss any medical conditions, discomforts, or areas that need special attention. Communicate your preferences regarding pressure and areas to avoid.

Set a Comfortable Environment: The massage area should be clean and relaxing. Ensure the room temperature, lighting, and sound levels are to your liking.

Listen to Your Body: During the massage, speak up if you feel any discomfort. It's important to let the therapist know immediately if something hurts or doesn't feel right.

Hydrate and Follow Up: After the massage, drink plenty of water and follow any advice your therapist gives for aftercare to maximize the benefits of your session.

Are there any conditions that would make massage therapy inadvisable?

Yes, certain conditions may make massage therapy inadvisable, often referred to as contraindications. These include severe thrombosis, infections, bleeding disorders, or acute injuries. It's crucial to consult with a healthcare provider and inform your massage therapist about any medical conditions or concerns prior to receiving therapy to ensure safety and appropriate treatment adjustments.

What are your qualifications?

All of our therapists are Licensed Massage Therapists (LMTs) with a vast array of experience and success in the field.

Two years ago, I started working out at Athlete Ready (AR), and it’s honestly changed my life. They’ve completely transformed my basketball game, helped me build confidence, and had a huge impact on my mental health. Beyond the training, the people are genuinely good hearted, and the community is amazing. I’m grateful for everyone at AR and everything they’ve done for me!

AR helped me feel prepared and ready for college season. After my first week of preseason, I felt confident, strong, and balanced in the weight room thanks to the couple of months I spent training with AR. I’m so grateful for AR and everything it has done for me!

I had the pleasure of reaching out to Jared, the owner of Athlete Ready, after not working with him for over 10 years. I needed some advice on how to promote my student athlete, and Jared was more than willing to assist. His responsiveness was impressive; he got back to me quickly and provided valuable insights that were incredibly helpful. It’s clear that Jared genuinely cares about helping others, and his willingness to go out of his way to assist speaks volumes about his character. I wholeheartedly recommend Jared and would choose to work with him again in a heartbeat. Thank you, Jared, for your kindness and support.

My daughter is a volleyball player who has really enjoyed the smaller class size and personalized workouts from her coaches. She has learned so much about form and has seen results on the court. Great coaches and environment to train outside your sport!

Going through major health issues led me to discover I had multiple food allergies, I was honestly afraid to eat. It felt overwhelming and isolating. Being referred to Veronica completely changed everything for me. She created a meal plan that was not only safe, but truly tailored to my specific allergies. For the first time, I felt like I could eat without fear while still nourishing my body in a balanced way. Beyond the nutrition, she supported me emotionally in a way I didn’t even realize I needed. She helped me understand that I wasn’t alone in this, and that there is real help and support out there. She gave me my confidence with food back and that’s something I’ll never take for granted. I can honestly say she changed my life. For all wellness support, I highly recommend Veronica.

The coaches are amazing, and I appreciate the flexibility of choosing between group workouts at various times of the day or one-on-one sessions. I have been working out with Coach Rob for two years and highly recommend the program to others.

Our 8-year-old daughter plays soccer and was competing in an older age division, where she initially struggled with strength. We decided to join Athlete Ready during the off-season, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve made for her development. Over the course of the 16-week program, we saw a dramatic improvement in her sprint speed and shot power. Not only did her physical performance improve, but her confidence on the field grew as well. Because of the results, we signed up for a full one-year membership and have made strength and conditioning a permanent part of her routine. We’re incredibly grateful for the support and guidance from the Athlete Ready team. Thank you, Athlete Ready!

We’ve had an outstanding experience working with Athlete Ready over the years. They have played a major role in helping our program develop stronger, faster, and more resilient athletes, with a strong emphasis on injury prevention. Their approach is innovative, structured, and incredibly motivating for our players. This past year, after finishing 4–6 for three consecutive seasons, we partnered closely with them to build a more intentional strength and conditioning program. The results spoke for themselves, we improved to 7–3 and made a run to the semifinals. Athlete Ready has been a huge part of our success, and their commitment to developing athletes both physically and mentally sets them apart. I highly recommend them to any program looking to take the next step.
